The Sailing the Nile Campaign has reached its half way stretch in Sohag, after starting off in Alexandria on 18 October and passing through the governorates of Aswan, Qena and the city of Luxor.
The objective of the campaign is to raise awareness on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) eight years after the Millennium Declaration and to promote the concept of volunteerism for the MDGs.
In each of the above mentioned governorates throughout the campaign, various activities are conducted and organized by our local partners and volunteers. These activities include opening ceremonies attended by the Governor of each governorate, and key speakers, press conferences, medical caravans, awareness sessions on the 8 MDGs in schools and universities, lectures on viral hepatitis, HIV AIDs, avian flu, art and photograph galleries displaying the work of youth and children, sports activities, plays, poems and songs performed by youth, as well as cleaning up the streets and school wall paintings.
The upcoming stops for the campaign will include Assyut, Menia, Beni Suef. The two felluccas will then reach their final destination in Cairo on Saturday, 13 December 2008 with a big celebration at the Gezerah Garden in Zamalek. We hope to see you all there.
We would like to thank all our local partners and volunteers for their support and hard work for making this campaign a success so far.
