The Sailing the Nile Campaign Reaches its Final Destination in Cairo and Celebrates International Volunteer Day
The S ailing the Nile for the Millennium Development Goals Campaign 2008 reached its final destination in Cairo at the Gezerah Gardens on Saturday, 13 December 2008. The Campaign is a joint effort between the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood, the Youth Association for Population and Development and the United Nations in Egypt, aiming to raise awareness and enhance civil society participation in efforts to achieve the MDGs through volunteerism.
The event also celebrated International Volunteer Day (5 December) and International Human Rights Day (10 December).
A total of over 2,000 participants attended, namely, representatives from the United Nations, campaign partners, local and international non-governmental organizations, donor organizations, school children, volunteers, youth, families, civil society at large and the media.
TV channels that covered the event were mainly; Dream TV, O TV, Nile News, Nile TV, and national TV (Channel 1 and two), radio and various representatives from national, regional and independent newspapers.
The Sailing the Nile Campaign for the Millennium Development Goals 2008 started off with Alexandria on 18 October 2008 and since then has passed through the governorates of Aswan, Qena, Sohag, Assyut, Minya, Beni Suef and th e city of Luxor.
Throughout the Campaign, various activities were conducted and organized by local partners and volunteers, which included opening ceremonies attended by the Governor of each governorate, key speakers, press conferences, medical caravans, awareness sessions on the 8 MDGs in schools and universities, lectures on viral hepatitis, HIV AIDs, avian influenza, sexual harassment, education reform, art and photograph exhibitions conducted by youth and children, sports activities, plays, poems and songs performed by youth, cleaning up the streets and school wall paintings.
